Posted March 9th, 2010 by admin and filed in Debate
There’s a debate on at 4pm tomorrow, Wednesday March 10, at the University of Queensland about whether or not Australia needs a Charter of Rights.

The debate will be between former Australian Democrats Senator, and Australian Greens candidate for the seat of Brisbane in this year’s Federal electionAndrew Bartlett, speaking in favour of a charter of rights, and James Allan, who is Garrick Professor of Law at the University of Queensland, speaking against.

If you like using Facebook to keep track of what you’re doing, there’s a Facebook event here. You can also become a fan of Andrew Bartlett’s election campaign here on Facebook, or follow him on Twitter.

Brisbane protest against planned 2am nightclub lockout – Thu 11 March 4pm Parliament House @qldlockedout

Posted March 6th, 2010 by admin and filed in Music, Protests, forced early venue closures

UPDATE: For a report with pictures, sound and video from the rally, click here.

The Queensland Locked Out organisation is holding a protest rally to let politicians and the public know that they’re against the idea of locking people out of nightclubs at 2am closing ALL licenced venues at 2am,  The proposal for a 2am lockout closure comes from the Queensland Police Union, in their submission (pdf file – scroll to page 73) to the Inquiry into Alcohol-Related Violence being held by the Law, Justice and Safety Committee of the Queensland Parliament.

Queensland Locked Out has countered with other proposals to deal with what it says is the major social issue of “extreme violence” on Brisbane streets. QLO’s proposals include harsher penalties for anti-social and aggressive behaviour, more police and security guards, ID scanners to keep a record of patrons entering nightclubs and other licenced premises, and chillout areas to be set up in entertainment districts.

There’s already a 3am lockout – meaning if you leave a nightclub after 3am you can’t get back in. The 3am lockout has been in place since 2005. The current lock-out does not apply to the Treasury Casino. The Treasury Casino is owned by Tabcorp, and the Queensland Government-owned QIC was the tenth-biggest shareholder in Tabcorp as of August 2009.

A trial of a 2am lockout in Victoria in 2008 ended after 3 months. This video shows Australian Greens member (and candidate for the seat of Melbourne in this year’s Federal Election) Adam Bandt speaking against Victoria’s lockout at a protest rally in Melbourne:

You can become a fan of the Queensland Locked Out Facebook page here, and the Facebook event for the March 12 rally is here. You can follow Queensland Locked Out on Twitter if you click here.

The rally is at Parliament House, on the corner of George and Alice Sts in Brisbane City – click here for a Google Map which includes public transport details. To find public transport route and timetable information, click here to use the Translink journey planner.

New to Twitter in Brisbane? Come +meet lots of people, Friday Mar 5 2010 @greystonebar #btub @btubr

Posted March 4th, 2010 by admin and filed in Meetups, btub
So, if you’ve just joined Twitter you may be be wondering exactly what all the fuss is about. People use Twitter in lots of different ways, but the main way I use it is to meet other people in Brisbane. Brisbane has a thriving community on Twitter, and once a month there’s a big meet-up called a btub.

The next btub is tomorrow night, Friday March 5th 2010, at Greystone Bar, Southbank.

btub stands for “Brisbane Twitter Underground Brigade” but it’s not really underground any more, we have lots of people turn up. There’s lots of interesting and friendly people to chat to so if you’re free, drop in – if you want to chat with me, my photo’s on the side of this blog (but I now have a goatee/mo). I’ll be late (about 10pm) because I don’t finish work till 9.30pm.

There’s a btub group on Facebook, and there’s a Facebook event for tomorrow night’s meetup. And you can also follow btub’s Twitter account.

The meetup is at Greystone Bar, 7/166 Grey St, Southbank – click here for a Google Map with public transport details. If you need to look up public transport routes or timetables, click here for the Translink journey planner.

If you’re on Twitter, a service that lets you find out what people are doing, you might want to follow the Brisbane Blog’s Twitter account and you’ll get updated every time there is a new story on the Brisbane Blog. Or if you want more, follow my personal account (David Jackmanson) and find out what I’m up to.

Brisbane Impro: “Enid Blyton: By the Book” $10 at Brisbane Arts Theatre Sunday March 7 @artstheatre

Posted March 2nd, 2010 by admin and filed in Impro, Theatre
Impro Mafia, who presented its third season of Prognosis: Death! in January, has a new one-night show coming up this Sunday: “Enid Blyton: By the Book”.

Apparently, the idea is that Enid Blyton has a new dog, Oscar, and she wants to write a book about his adventures. Naturally, the book will contain the suggestions shouted out by the audience.

Tickets are $10, and the show is on at 7.30pm this Sunday, March 7 2010 the Brisbane Arts Theatre, 210 Petrie Terrace, Brisbane City. For a Google map showing the Brisbane Arts Theatre, including public transport details, click here. Of course, when I think of Enid Blyton parodies, I always think of Five Go Mad In Dorset:
